Introduction to Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Over time, your eyes look tired, heavy, or aged, even if you still feel energetic and youthful on the inside. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a refined procedure designed to restore a more refreshed, open, and youthful appearance to the eyes.

At the Miami practice of Dr. Martin Jugenburg, a renowned plastic surgeon with an international reputation, eyelid surgery is performed with meticulous attention to detail to ensure results that look natural, never overdone.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure we offer our Miami clients that can be performed on the upper lids, the lower lids, or both, if they choose. It addresses common concerns such as drooping skin, puffiness, and under-eye bags, which can make you look older or more tired than you feel.

Dr. Jugenburg can achieve this by reshaping the eyelid area to restore a rested, alert look without altering your eye’s character too much.

  • Upper eyelid surgery focuses on removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to open the eyes and create a youthful look. Incisions for an upper blepharoplasty are placed along the natural creases of your upper lids, allowing them to heal discreetly.

This procedure is ideal for our patients whose eyelids feel heavy or have skin that droops over the lash line, sometimes even affecting their vision.

  • Lower eyelid surgery is designed to smooth and rejuvenate the area beneath the eyes by addressing puffiness, under-eye bags, and fine wrinkles. Depending on your needs, Dr. Jugenburg may remove or reposition fat, tighten the skin, and blend the lower eyelid into the cheek area for a smoother transition.

The result is a refreshed look that still feels completely natural.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Eyelid Surgery?

Ideal candidates are healthy adults with sagging skin, puffiness, or tired-looking eyes who wish to improve. Good skin elasticity, realistic expectations, and a commitment to proper aftercare are important.

Whether your concerns are age-related or hereditary, Dr. Jugenburg will determine the most effective surgical plan for you during your consultation.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery can:

  • Brighten and open the eyes
  • Reduce puffiness and under-eye bags
  • Smooth fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
  • Improve vision in cases where drooping lids block sight
  • Help you look more rested and alert

Many of our patients find that even a small improvement in the eye area makes their whole face appear more youthful.

What’s the First Step?

The first step is scheduling a consultation at our Miami office. Dr. Jugenburg and the consultation team will evaluate your eyelid area, discuss your concerns, and recommend the best procedure for you.

This is also your chance to review before-and-after photos, ask questions, and learn exactly what to expect before, during, and after your eyelid surgery.

What to Expect on the Day of Eyelid Surgery

Your eyelid surgery day will begin with your arrival at the clinic and a meeting with Dr. Jugenburg and his team to review your plan.

Depending on your specific treatment plan and the complexity of your procedure, eyelid surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia.

Incisions are placed in natural creases (upper lids) or just beneath the lash line or inside the lower eyelid, keeping scars well-hidden. Once the excess skin and fat are addressed, the incisions are closed with fine sutures.

Most of our eyelid surgeries take one to two hours, but you can expect to rest in the recovery area for a while before heading home later that day.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Recovery from eyelid surgery is generally straightforward. Most patients experience mild swelling, bruising, and tightness around the eyes for the first week. Cold compresses and prescribed ointments can help speed healing.

After surgery, avoid strenuous activities for about 2 weeks. Many people feel comfortable returning to work and social events within 7 to 10 days, but full healing, including scar fading, continues over several months.
